Designing for focus

How hierarchy, spacing, and restraint help readers concentrate on what matters.

Focused interfaces do not demand attention everywhere at once. They establish a clear reading order and let secondary actions remain secondary.

Create a strong hierarchy

Use size, weight, spacing, and contrast consistently. A visitor should understand the page structure before reading every word.

Reduce visual competition

Not every container needs a border, shadow, and background. White space can create grouping without adding another visual object.

Design for different ways of reading

Good focus also means keyboard access, visible focus states, useful headings, and links whose purpose is clear without surrounding context.
